Emotion: Depression and Anxiety

Depression can be a very serious condition that affects millions
of people each year. For some their depression becomes so
severe that they require medication, but for the majority of
the others that suffer from depression exercise is one of the
best treatments. Exercise can switch on certain genes that
increase the brain's level of galanin, a peptide neurotransmitter
that appears to tone down the body's stress response by
regulating another brain chemical, norepinephrine. The result
is that exercise primes the brain to show less stress in
response to new stimuli. The hardest part is when you
have anxiety or depression, exercise often seems like the
last thing you want to do. But once you get motivated,
exercise can make a big difference.

Workout Solution: Group Classes, Boot Camp, Running,
and Biking

Because strong social support is important for those with
depression, joining a group exercise class may be beneficial.
Or you can exercise with a close friend or your partner.
In doing so, you will benefit from the physical activity and
emotional comfort, knowing that others are supportive of you.
Getting out and enjoy nature is also very helpful and benefitical.
The fresh air and sunlight can be very theraputic, especially
for those who are suffering from Seasonal Affect Disorder.
